In the month of January the Newtown Fire Association and Newtown Emergency Services Department responded to 41 fire/rescue emergency calls. The average number of firefighters responding per call was 19, with a total of 11 hours and 10 minutes of in service time for the month.
The Newtown Fire Association would also like to thank the officers and firefighters of the Northampton, Yardley Makefield and Penndel Fire Companies for providing fire/rescue coverage to the Newtown community. These department’s provided support to our department over a two day period for the viewing and funeral services for Life Member and past Asst. Chief Richard Forsyth who passed away on January 13, 2008. The following is an overview of January responses from the past month: | |
1/13/08 @ 1:34am: Firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of Delaney Drive for a reported brush fire. Upon arrival the fire was found in a pile of discarded Christmas trees at the end of a driveway. Fire crew extinguished the fire and Newtown Township PD was also notified to respond and investigate. In service 25 minutes, 22 firefighters responded.

1/13/08 @ 3:44pm: Department was dispatched for a building fire at 99 Barclay Street. Mutual aid departments also responded from Engine 3 and 73 (Northampton) and Ladder 21, (Langhorne). Initial arriving crews found an odor inside the building and after further investigation found careless cooking in an apart as to the cause for the smoke and odor reported. In service 10 minutes, 36 firefighters responded.

1/14/08 @ 9:08pm: Firefighters were call to a home in the 100 block of Bay Shore Drive for a reported dwelling fire. Upon arrival of Chief 45, found a malfunctioning washing machine with a smoke condition inside the residents. Crews worked to remove the appliances and performed services to ventilate and clear the smoke from the residents to reduce overall damage. In service 20 minutes, 41 firefighters responded.

1/17/08 @ 11:53pm:The Department was called to the 100 block of Pine Tree Court for a reported electrical problem inside of the home. Firefighters arrived to find a malfunctioning light fixture in the foyer. Power was secured to the light fixture. Firefighters in service 15 minutes. 30 firefighters responded on the call.

1/20/08 @ 7:19pm : Newtown was dispatched for a report of a structure fire in the 100 block of Diamond Drive. Firefighters arrived to find a problem had developed with a fire in the fire place requiring the crew to take corrective actions and investigate for hidden fire. The Engine and Ladder crews were in service to remove items from the fireplace, ladder the roof and remove smoke from inside the home. In service time 50 minutes, 32 firefighters responded.

1/21/08 @ 9:34pm: Companies responded to 100 block of Essex Place for a reported dwelling fire. Upon arrival of Department personnel, the homeowner reported a problem developed when starting a fire in the fireplace. A smoke condition was present inside the residence. Crews checked the home, both inside and from the roof, to insure all was secure and safe by using ladders, thermal imaging equipment and smoke removal fans. In service, 35 minutes. 41 firefighters responded.

1/22/08 @ 1:07am: Firefighters/EMT’s dispatched for a medical assist requested by Medic 167(Penndel Middletown) to Oak Ridge Drive. Utility 45 responded with a crew of Firefighter/EMT’s and assisted the medic’s with patient care procedures and accompanied the Medics to St Mary Medical Center. In service 35 minutes. 3 Firefighter/EMT’s responded on the assist call.

1/24/08 @ 8:51am: Engine 55-1 and the on duty crew of Newtown Emergency Services Department, responded to assist Station 35 (Wrightstown) for a reported chimney fire in the 500 block of Mud Road. Companies arrived on location to find a wood stove indications showing a possible fire inside the chimney. Crews in service to insure all fire was out and check the home for any possible fire extension. In service for 30 minutes. 5 firefighters responded from NESD.

1/25/08 @ 6:30pm: Firefighters and EMS were dispatched for an auto accident with subjects reported to be trapped. The accident was reported to be in the area of the Tyler State Park entrance on Route 332. All responding units were placed in service on this two vehicle accident and performed rescue operations using all available cutting and hydraulic tools to free the trapped occupants. Firefighters assisted EMS crews with patient care. Newtown Fire Assn.(Station 45/55) was assisted by Fire/Rescue units from the Northampton Fire Company(Station 3/73) and EMS crews from Newtown( Squad 145), Tri-Hampton( Squad 115) and Penndel-Middletown(Squad 167). In service 1 hour, 10 minutes, 18 firefighters responded.

1/27/08 @ 2:44pm: Dispatched to a reported brush fire on Tyler State Park property. Crews arrived to find a small fire along the creek in the area of the Boathouse. In service 15 minutes, 23 firefighters responded.

1/28/08 @ 7:15pm: Fire crews dispatched to assist Newtown Township Police with hazard control at a two vehicle traffic accident located at Richboro Road and the Route 413 Bypass. Rescue 45 and Engine 55 assisted the Police Officers with scene lighting and the placement of oil dry on the roadway to control fluids. In service time 20 minutes, 17 firefighters responding.
